11 in class tonight, I was in a much better frame of mind today and class went down well.
We covered some concepts and attacks from side-back control, including
- Establishing the position
- Basic rolling escape from submissive position
- Clock Choke
- Cuff choke
- Rear Naked
- Switch base roll over to open up the turtle position
- Jumping pass to defeat the rolling escape.

Establishing the position: opponent is turtled, you are at opponent's left side.
1. Insert your right knee between opponent's left elbow & left knee. If there isn't space, place it on opponent's right thigh. left leg is posted out to your left
2. with your left hand, grab back of opponent's collar, right hand grabs at back of belt/pants.
3. lift up, pulling with both hands. As opponent opens up, pop your right knee into the gap.
4. drop back down, put your weight on the opponent rather than your right knee, right hand grabs opponent's right shoulder, elbow presses in to control the body: side back control.
Basic rolling escape from submissive position: now you are in the turtle, opponent has side back control at your left side.
1. opponent stuffs up, and inserts his right hand under your right arm, and grabs your right forearm.
2. Claim his right arm by pressing your right elbow into your side (no need to take the hand back to your thigh like the "switchout" escape)
3. Straighten your right leg, and collapse/roll to your right, taking opponent over - end up with opponent on his back, you are roughly in side control, base switched through to the back.
4. grab opponent's knees, and move around (to your left) to front control, hopefully crossfacing opponent with his right arm.
Clock Choke: opponent is turtled, we have side back control at opponent's left side
1. insert left hand over opponent's left shoulder, across throat, grab opponent's right lapel (thumb inside)
2. With the left hand anchor, can now safely insert right hand under opponent's right armpit, grab his right forearm.
3. Switch base/right leg through to the front. your weight moves from opponent's back onto his head/neck, forcing his head to the mat and preventing him escaping the choke. right hand pulls backwards as you move your body forwards.
4. pull with left hand, and walk legs around to the right to get the tap
Cuff choke: opponent is turtled, we have side back control at opponent's left side
1. Insert left hand as above, but instead of grabbing collar, pass arm further across so your left hand is out by opponent's right shoulder
2. Put fingers of your left hand into right cuff
3. Bring your right hand back over towards you, blade of hand goes down left side of opponent's neck
4. Straighten arms to apply choke. Need to keep away to left of opponent to have enough space to get choke, rather than being right on top/behind.
Rear Naked: opponent is turtled, we have side back control at opponent's left side
1. Insert left hand even further now, so bicep is against left side of opponent's neck, left hand grabs/crawls up your right shoulder (need to be much more behind opponent now)
2. blade of right hand goes behind opponent's neck, squeeze elbows for choke.
Switch base roll over to open up the turtle position: opponent is turtled, we have side back control at opponent's left side, having trouble exposing the neck, inserting the knee etc etc
1. Switch base: left leg comes alongside opponent's left leg - match your shin exactly along his. right leg goes behind/outside opponent's right foot as a post.
2. Grab opponent's right shoulder with your right hand.
3. Sit back over your left leg, pulling opponent over with right hand. From here can either: insert the hooks and take the back; underhook the right hand and drag backwards to side control; or take the right leg over for sidemount - depends how much opponent opens up
Jumping pass to defeat the rolling escape: opponent is turtled, we have side back control at opponent's left side
1. Now you stuff up and insert the right arm. opponent starts to roll to right2. Quickly run around (or over?) opponent's legs to your right, aim to get to where opponent is trying to roll you, but belly-down instead of belly-up.
3. Can now underhook opponent's left arm with your left arm, and drag back to side control while extracting your right arm from underneath opponent.
Wow! Someone may have too much time on their hands, but thank you for using it so productively!
